Tableau | ExcelNBA Analysis Dashboard

As a fan of the NBA and basketball in general, I wanted to analyze trends in the NBA from the introduction of the 3-point line in the 1979/80 season to the current 2024/25 season.I was interested in answering the following questions:
1. What does 3-point attempt rate (3PAR) look like over time?
2. What other trends do we see over time?
3. Which teams consistently rank the best on offense? What about defense?
4. Which teams are the most offensive or defensive leaning?
I took the following steps to create my analysis:
1. Exported the advanced stats table from basketballreference.com for all seasons and accumulated them in a Google spreadsheet.
2. Cleaned and prepared data for analysis, including adding rank by year values.
3. Uploaded the data to Tableau, then made parameters and graphs.
4. Combined graphs into a dashboard, then formatted the dashboard for ease of use and proper filtering.
These are my key takeaways:
1. 3PAR slowly increased from the 1980s then exploded in the 2010s.
2. TOV% has decreased over time, while pace has increased significantly since the 1990s.
3. The Los Angeles Lakers rank the highest for average offensive rank, while the San Antonio Spurs rank the highest for average defensive rank.
4. The Miami Heat rank as the most defensively leaning team, while the Dallas Mavericks rank as the most offensively leaning team.
More questions can be asked and answered using this dashboard. Additionally, it can be easily updated to include more seasons in the future.
